Artificial intelligence is everywhere these days, helping different industries in many ways. Big tech companies are in a race to lead in AI. But in November 2022, OpenAI made a big move with ChatGPT. This AI company in San Francisco keeps improving its big language model called GPT to stay ahead.
Sam Altman, the CEO of the company, is one of the most talked-about leaders in the world of AI. With ChatGPT gaining lots of fans for its many uses, people often ask Altman about what's next for his company. Will they create GPT-5 or AGI? AGI, which means Artificial General Intelligence, is like the ultimate dream of making something as smart as a human. It's a system that can do any job a person can do. But with big possibilities come big worries.
Sam Altman and OpenAI's CTO, Mira Murati, recently had a chat with The Wall Street Journal. During their nearly hour-long talk, they talked about OpenAI's big ideas for AGI.
"What's AGI, and why do people want it so much? Mira Murati explained that AGI can be a real game-changer. It's like having one super-smart system that can handle lots of different jobs in the digital world.
On the other hand, Sam Altman thinks there are two big things that will matter most in the next few decades. One is AGI, which means super smart and capable machines. The other is having enough affordable and abundant energy. Sam believes AGI can be a game-changer, making us really smart and creative.
With AGI, we could do amazing new things and find solutions to tough problems. Sam thinks it will be the best tool we have, helping us create and solve problems like never before. Even though there will be challenges, Sam believes that AGI will make our lives better. He imagines a future where we use AGI to make great things for ourselves, our communities, and the world, making our human story even more exciting.
When will we see AGI? Sam Altman thinks it might happen in the next ten years. Mira Murati mentioned that defining intelligence can be tricky. She said that people often talk about how deep, conscious, or sentient it is. She also noted how our understanding of intelligence has evolved over time. We used to measure it with things like chess, but now we have models like GPT that can do much more. Sam Altman mentioned that the definition of AI keeps changing, and this keeps OpenAI working hard.
When asked why he called AGI 'median human,' Sam Altman explained that for a long time, AI has been not as good as humans in many things. For example, in subjects I'm really good at, AI like GPT-4 or GPT-5 might not do a great job. But in areas where I'm just okay, these systems can do really well.
Sam means that experts in specific fields can do amazing things, and it might take AI a long time to be as good as them. However, in more general tasks or things that I'm not very good at, AI can be quite helpful. So, in tasks I'm not an expert in, future AI systems might be a big help.
When they asked when we'll get GPT-5, Mira Murati didn't give a straight answer. She said, 'We're not there yet. I'll tell you when it's time.' We don't have a clear date for when AGI will arrive, but tech companies are all working to make their AI models better. Sam Altman and Mira Murati both said that GPT-3, GPT-4, and GPT-4.5 are steps toward AGI.
