EU Sets December 1 Deadline for Facebook's Meta and Snap to Detail Child Protection Strategies

Meta Platforms, the owner of Facebook, and Snap, a social media company, have until December 1 to provide the European Union (EU) with more information on how they protect children from harmful content, as announced by the European Commission on Friday.

This request for information about measures to enhance the protection of minors follows a similar directive issued to YouTube and TikTok by the EU just a day prior.

Last month, the Commission urgently instructed companies such as Meta, X, and TikTok to outline the actions they have taken to combat the spread of content related to terrorism, violence, and hate speech on their platforms.

If the Commission finds the companies' responses unsatisfactory, it has the authority to initiate investigations against them.

The recently implemented Digital Services Act (DSA) introduces new rules for online content, requiring major platforms to be more proactive in removing illegal and harmful content. Failure to comply may result in fines of up to 6% of their global turnover.
