Smartphone Replacement? Meet the Humane AI Pin

0

Humane AI, a company based in San Francisco, has just launched its new invention, the AI Pin. This tiny wearable device, created by former Apple designers Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, aims to replace smartphones. The AI Pin comes in two parts: a square device and a battery pack that easily attaches to any piece of clothing using magnets.

This unique wearable doesn't have a screen, and users can interact with it through their voice, hand movements, and a blue laser projector. According to the startup, it's a standalone device with a built-in AI software platform. The AI Pin is available in three colors: Eclipse, Lunar, and Equinox. The price of this innovative device is $699 (approximately Rs 58,212), and there's also an optional monthly subscription of $25 (about Rs 2,082).

What's the Ai Pin?

The Ai Pin is made up of two parts – a computer and a battery booster. The battery booster keeps a small battery inside the main computer running all day long. This means users can switch the battery whenever they need to, making it a perpetual power system that lets users use their Ai Pin for as long as they want.

To respect privacy, the device doesn't have wake words, so it's not always listening or recording. It only does something when the user interacts with it using their voice, touch gestures, or the laser ink display. The device has its own connectivity through the Humane Network, connected by T-Mobile, and it's powered by a fast Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. Notifications are delivered through a beacon, informing users about messages, food deliveries, or cab arrivals.

It's important to mention that the device doesn't have traditional apps. Instead, Humane's OS relies on AI experiences on the device and in the cloud. According to the creators, the OS understands what the user needs and selects the right AI to perform the function. This is a big deal because users won't have to search for, download, or manage apps anymore. The AIs are streamed on demand at an incredible speed.

How to Use the Ai Pin?

In a demo, one of the founders, Imran Chaudhri, showcased how the Ai Pin can play music using voice commands. The player's controls were projected onto the palm of his hand. Simple hand motions, like tilting to the sides, allowed Chaudhri to play the next or previous tracks, and closing his palm took him back to the home screen.

The Ai Pin's camera features include an ultrawide RGB camera, depth sensor, and motion sensors. It boasts a special speaker that can create an intimate or loud sound. The Trust Light, built into the hardware via a dedicated privacy chip, signals when optical and audio sensors are active, ensuring transparency and data security. The Ai Pin is designed to prevent exploitation, requiring restoration from Humane if physically tampered with.

Charging the device is straightforward. The Ai Pin comes with a rugged charging case that accommodates the entire device and a battery booster. Using USB-C, it's easy to carry and durable. The device, starting at $699, includes the Ai Pin, Charge Pad, cable and adapter, charge case, and an extra battery booster. With a $24 subscription, users gain access to Humane’s suite of AI-powered services, with unlimited queries, text, talk, data, and a dedicated cell phone number for the device. Pre-orders in the US start on November 16, with plans for international availability yet to be disclosed.

Before its launch, the Ai Pin made waves at Paris Fashion Week, worn by supermodel Naomi Campbell. Imran Chaudhri's TED Talk featuring the device also generated considerable buzz.
