In a potential resolution to EU antitrust charges, Apple has reportedly offered rivals access to its tap-and-go mobile payments systems, used for mobile wallets. Three insider sources revealed this move, seen as a step to avoid a substantial fine and address competition concerns.

Last year, the European Union's competition watchdog accused Apple of hindering competitors' access to its Near-Field Communication (NFC) tap-and-go technology. This limitation allegedly impeded rivals from developing competing services on Apple devices.

To settle the matter, Apple's proposal involves allowing rivals access to its tap-and-go tech, a gesture that could lead to an agreement and avert a hefty penalty. The European Commission is expected to gather input from competitors and customers next month before making a decision on Apple's offer.

While the exact timing and certainty of the market test are subject to change, this potential resolution signals Apple's willingness to address concerns raised by EU regulators. Both the European Commission and Apple have not provided official comments at this time.

Apple Pay, utilized by more than 2,500 banks and 250 fintechs and challenger banks in Europe, relies on the NFC chip to facilitate tap-and-go payments on iPhones and iPads. The outcome of this proposed resolution will likely impact the landscape of mobile payments and competition in the EU market.
