Come mid-year, Volkswagen's voice assistant, powered by ChatGPT, will engage in interactive conversations with users, adding a touch of futuristic technology to the driving experience. The technology is slated to be available for customers in North America and Europe from early in the second quarter of this year.
Imagine uttering, "I'm feeling cold," and your car adjusts the temperature accordingly. Or saying, "I want butter chicken," and instantly receiving information about the nearest Indian restaurant. These are just a glimpse of the capabilities that ChatGPT brings to Volkswagen's vehicles. The AI is designed to understand and respond to a variety of requests, offering a personalized and user-friendly interface.
Executives from Volkswagen and Cerence, the technology partner collaborating on this venture, highlighted the versatility of ChatGPT. Kai Gruenitz, Volkswagen's board member for technical development, emphasized that customers prefer the convenience of speech dialogue systems over manual adjustments.

Gruenitz explained, "If you have Apple CarPlay or Android or something, you are not able to adjust functionalities inside of the vehicle. That’s the next step. I think what our customers are really looking for is seamless, intuitive usage of their car."

It's worth noting that General Motors had previously announced its work on a virtual personal assistant using AI models akin to ChatGPT. Mercedes-Benz also explored similar avenues, conducting a test program last June that allowed vehicles equipped with the "MBUX" system to download ChatGPT.
