Yahoo Buys Artifact App Developed by Instagram Founders for AI Integration

Yahoo, the renowned news and information hub, has acquired Artifact, a news aggregator app crafted by Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. This acquisition aims to leverage Artifact's AI technology to enhance Yahoo's news recommendation algorithm.

Artifact, which was launched in January 2023, has now been acquired by Yahoo. Although Artifact will no longer exist as a standalone app, its advanced AI-driven personalization features will be integrated into Yahoo's suite of products, including the Yahoo news app.


Despite garnering a dedicated user base, Artifact faced challenges in sustaining its growth and market appeal. Kevin Systrom acknowledged this in a blog post, stating that while the app had a loyal following, the market opportunity did not justify further investment.


Throughout its lifespan, Artifact introduced various features such as AI-generated article summaries, social media-like posting capabilities, and user engagement tools. However, managing these features, particularly content moderation, proved challenging for the small team behind the app.


Artifact's AI-powered algorithm curated news content based on users' preferences and browsing history. While it attracted a niche audience, it struggled to achieve widespread adoption. Yahoo's acquisition signals a strategic move to integrate Artifact's innovative technology into its platform, leveraging its extensive reach and user base.


Kat Downs Mulder, SVP and General Manager of Yahoo News, expressed excitement about integrating Artifact's technology, highlighting its potential to enhance Yahoo's role as a trusted source of digital information.


Kevin Systrom shared his optimism about the acquisition, expressing hope that Artifact's user-centric approach will thrive under Yahoo's stewardship, fulfilling the founders' original vision of scalability and impact.
