For decades, researchers puzzled over what seemed to be a 280-million-year-old fossil named Tridentinosaurus antiquus, found in the Italian Alps in 1931. Initially, its distinct body shape, appearing dark against the rock, was thought to be preserved soft tissue, leading to its classification as a member of the reptile group Pterosauria.

However, upon reexamination, it was revealed that the fossil was not as ancient as believed and had been tampered with. This discovery challenges previous notions about reptile evolution in the region and highlights the importance of thorough scientific scrutiny in paleontology.
